Could she build another way home with this controller? She rolled the ball around at the center and clicked buttons. Nothing happened. “Anyone know how this thing works?”

Rocket took the controller, fiddled with it, turned it over, and fiddled with it some more. “It doesn’t work for me. You try it,” he handed it to Weevile.

Weevile looked at it, rotated it, then sniffed. “Yep, when it comes to electronics, I’m not your man.” He handed it back to Dora.

“Maybe it only works for Alex,” said Rocket.

“Well, if he’s gone home, I need to go home too. That tree was my ride and I missed it. Do you know another way out?” asked Dora.

“We haven’t asked yet. We hacked our way in and there’s supposed to be a button on the computer in the LAB we push. But Blake said it malfunctioned so they deleted it. He told us you’ve been in here for a few days and you’re totally fine. He said you were getting healthier all the time.”

“Days!” screamed Dora. “No wonder Alex came looking for me. I need to talk to him. Klondike says going home and coming back in will lessen the results. But it feels like they’re keeping something from me. Why does Sam need to break me out?”

“Getting out is easy. Don’t panic,” Rocket said to Weevile. “We just kill each other. Easy-peasy,” he shrugged.

“Are you sure there isn’t anything on the controller?” Weevile, yanked it out of Dora’s hands. “Right here, there’s an IM pad.” He swiveled the base open to a text screen.

“Perfect! You’re a genius!” said Dora joyfully. Dora typed SAM. Sure enough, it recognized his contact information.

GET ME HOME, she typed. They heard the familiar swoosh of a message sending. “Now we just need Sam’s tech to work,” Dora said, holding it up to the sky. “He has connectivity issues. He lives in a permanent dead zone.”

Swoosh came a response. ‘I love you.’ Dora’s eyes welled up with tears. It had been too long since he’d said that. Then swoosh. ‘Now jump!’ it read.

“Jump?” she questioned.

Weevile hopped up and down. “No! What? I’m afraid of heights!”

Dora looked towards the cliff. “He spent all that time and the only way out… is to jump? We’re administering Wellness Treatments, for God’s sake!”

“I thought it seemed weird when Blake said the way out was broken. That’d be a priority fix,” said Rocket. Weevile squirmed.

“All right, let’s do this!” Dora walked to the edge. “I need to talk to Alex. If we take a running start and jump off this cliff, I think we’d be done for, don’t you?”

“Look at all those branches,” Weevile shuddered.

“And rocks. Yep, that ought to work nicely,” Rocket said. The raven flew up to a high branch overlooking the drop and squawked three times.

Swoosh ‘Hurry,’ read the controller. They took a running step.

“Wait!” Dora stopped short. “How do we know it’s Sam typing? It could be anyone. What if it’s that crazy nurse?”

“The thing is,” said Weevile, “that nurse seemed super crazy at first, but then she kind of made sense.
